Welcome from the Headmistress

sue johnston principal of al salam schoolA warm welcome to you from our Principal, Mrs Sue Johnston

It is my great pleasure to warmly welcome you to Al Salam Private School!

I am delighted you are interested in learning more about our vibrant school and community. As the Founding Headmistress of Al Salam School, I feel deeply fulfilled by the achievements, successes and consistent progress of our school since 1988.

I remember when we began our journey, with a handful of students more than 30 years ago. Since that time, and with a steady dose of constant dedication and consistent effort, we have grown rapidly.

I am happy that at our school we have one of the highest retention rates for our staff and students – many of our staff members have stayed with us for more than 15-20 years, and this is reflective of their care and commitment towards our school, and our appreciation of them. There is certainly no ‘I’ in the word team, and every member of our staff works extremely hard with me to ensure our children have the best care and support possible.

We now have more than 900 pupils and more than 300 staff happily calling Al Salam their ‘home away from home’ this year.

The importance of the parent-teacher-student ‘triangle’

I believe that parents, students and schools form the foundations for incredible growth for our children. I always say that parents, students and school form a triangle – each party have a duty to connect together closely and ensure the bond is tight. Only when this bond is tightened, will our children flourish and succeed.

I am proud of the achievements of the whole team, which are reflected in the positive views of the DSIB inspectors, and our warm relationship with KHDA, with whom we have grown and developed side by side over the years.

Our diverse community of openness and inclusion

One of the things I love most about our school and staff is that we are a wonderfully diverse, open and inclusive community. This does not happen by chance: from our Senior Leadership Team right through to our support staff and operations staff, we are all sincerely intentional and open about being a highly inclusive multi-national, multi-cultural, multi-ability community of students, parents, staff and teachers.

I am both amazed and proud that at our school we now have over 30 nationalities and over 20 languages spoken by our families. This is deeply reflective of Al Salam’s core values – inclusive diversity – and we are all extremely intentional about being welcoming to all.

The two things we should give our children

I also believe that it is our duty to give our children two vital things: faith, and education.

At a time when our children are facing a future where they are applying for jobs that didn’t exist when they were at school, I believe that this makes it even more fundamentally important!

It is with a profound sense of intention and urgency that Al Salam is looking ahead towards the challenges we face in preparing our children – often for jobs that don’t even exist yet. Equipping our children with a sense of proactive ‘can-do’ attitude is at the heart of our approach, and I am so proud that over the years the Al Salam team has helped propel thousands of students into some of the top universities, companies and initiatives in and around the world.

A personal note

As a lifelong teacher and learner, I truly believe I have the best job in the world. Making this even better, I am blessed to be surrounded by an incredibly supportive, highly qualified and integrity-rich team – at every level.

Thank you – and welcome again!
